It does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty — one of many educational facts children of the ’90s might not have known if it wasn’t for Cher.
Every so often a piece of pop culture is released that touches everyone who comes in contact with it. In 1995, it was the movie “Clueless.”
Cher (Alicia Silverstone) and friends helped define a population: Valley girls. Their extravagant Beverly Hills lifestyle — which includes shopping, makeovers, parties, driving without a license and using a computer program to pick out clothes in the morning — became the envy of teens everywhere.
In addition to the many scenes filmed in Cher’s classic Beverly Hills mansion with columns that “date back to 1972,” viewers become quite familiar with Cher and Dionne’s (Stacey Dash) high school.
Like any high school featured in a teen movie, the popular guys, skaters and girls who recently had nose jobs each have their own designated areas, a tidbit Cher and Dionne have to explain to their new “project” Tai (Brittany Murphy) when she transfers to their school.
Murphy’s role as Tai is not a far cry from her subsequent roles in “Summer Catch” and “Uptown Girls,” which is not a bad thing. Murphy has a way of lighting up the screen, even though her sole purpose is usually comic relief.
The great thing about “Clueless” is that anyone can enjoy it. There’s a character for everyone to identify with, or at the very least, laugh at.
