The New Rivals' "Fire for Effect" is the epitome of short but sweet.

In fact, it can't be considered an album at all.

The EP is The New Rivals' first piece of work, consisting of only four songs. It is a preview of what's to come on the group's self-titled debut project, set for release in the spring.

When listening to "Fire for Effect," the punk-rock grunge aura is all over the place. For some who like the classics, the Red Hot Chili Peppers come to mind while listening. For others who like fresher bands, you may hear echoes of Fall Out Boy or the Foo Fighters. If you like anything even remotely similar to these groups, "Fire for Effect" is a must-hear.

Their overall sound may be evocative of Face to Face and the Chili Peppers - two bands who are part of their inspiration - but it's tweaked into something all their own. The first track is titled "Hell is for Heroes," and it's a head-banging track that combines fast-paced vocals with a strong drum track. The guitar is rather subtle, but the chords come out in the individual verses.

"Mudslinging," the second track on the EP, will be on the debut album. It's just as grungy as the first track, but with a hint of lyrical sophistication. It has a heavy-metal undertone, also, with those screaming background vocals that make you lash out irrationally. It's also home to the strongest lyrics and vocals on the EP.

Don't be surprised if your diaphragm feels sore after singing this one.

The last two tracks mirror each other. "Hold My Head" contains even more excellent background vocals in a creative way that keeps the song within the realm of the alternative genre. In addition to the mechanics of the track, it has a very catchy chorus - the kind that gets stuck in your head - so don't be surprised if you find yourself singing it in the shower.

"Heels to the Ceiling" is the last song, and it harbors the most steady beat of all the tracks. It's also just the second track that has the title of the song in the lyrics - "Hold My Head" is the other. It's another head-banging track that'll help you feel the passion without the overbearing bass of some rock pieces and the out-of-control percussion of others. They also work with urbane digital vocals in the background, which gives the song a nice electrical touch.

As for the band itself, they're relatively new to the punk rock scene. "Fire for Effect" is basically a sample of its music, as the debut album has yet to release. But don't just take my word for it - "Fire for Effect" is available now on iTunes, so check it out for yourself.
