Jeanine Cull sat in silence in the Auditorium basement as the events played out before her, offering advice during a five-minute break in the action.

Student actors walked on and off the stage of the Arena Theatre on Monday - bringing to life "As Bees in Honey Drown," the story of Evan Wyler, a young, naive writer craving to have a taste of success.

"Evan meets a young woman named Alexa Vere de Vere, and she gives him a little taste of that life," said Cull, the director of the show.

The play, written by Douglas Carter Beane, is being performed by the MSU Department of Theatre beginning Tuesday.

The play is a dark comedy "perfect for today's society," Cull said. "I think the play will make a lot of the audience sit back and laugh at themselves."

The life Alexa creates for herself is similar to the lifestyles of Hollywood stars - one reason why audiences will enjoy the performance, theater senior Kamaal Reffigee said.

"She's like Paris Hilton and people want to watch and admire her because she's so over the top," Reffigee said.

For theater senior Danielle Silverman, playing the role of Alexa was an opportunity she couldn't turn down.

"The character is very complex ... (As an actress), you have to layer her by hiding her past and faking her future to get the audience on your side," Silverman said.

The play is exciting and will have characters the younger generation will be able to connect with, said actor Joel King, a master of fine arts student actor.

"It's new, it's fresh and it brings high society life and the exciting life of New York (City) all wrapped into a small evening of theater," King said.
