Radiohead's music a worthy obsession

I have an addiction, and their name is Radiohead.

I go through phases where I must listen to certain bands essentially nonstop; an example of this being The Beatles. Once you get me in a Beatles mood, it’s hard to put a stop to it.

But Radiohead is a whole new playing field. Why didn’t I realize the extent of their awesomeness before? Sure, I remember seeing the video for “Knives Out” when I was in middle school, and I appreciated hearing “Creep” for the first time in high school.

Now, it’s like my ears have just been cleared of all other garbage on the radio that is considered music for some quality listening time between me and the band that is known for their strange Googly Minotaur symbol on albums and other paraphernalia.

Radiohead has an amazing new music video out for “House of Cards,” a song from their new album, “In Rainbows.” In the video, no cameras or lights were used but 3-D plotting data technologies that gather information about relative shapes and distances of objects.

If you have any time to spare, go to YouTube.com and watch the video for “House of Cards” to see what I mean. Your eyes as well as your ears will thank you.

My musical tastes have calmed down substantially since I began college. I used to be a big fan of Anti-Flag and The Vandals, but as I’ve gotten older my tastes have shifted to a taste for music more like Iron & Wine, Sufjan Stevens and Andrew Bird.

Radiohead settles comfortably into that category. And I’m not complaining.

Marilyn, welcome to the club!

But I will say, I’m with Andrew also at feeling a bit old hearing your first listen to Knives Out was in Middle School (have you heard the Flaming Lips cover? 100% awesome, too! No? Get it, get it, get it.). I’m old enough to have bought Pablo Honey when it first came out, and then took a hiatus from RH for a few years…

I dropped back into the fold between OK Computer and Kid A, and I’ve never looked back. They’re truly a treat, we’re so lucky they’re actively creating more art for us in our lifetimes.

Sure, maybe some of the content is a bit of a downer, on occasion…but they’re just reflecting the world we live in…and there’s always a Bangers ‘n’ Mash or Where I and and You Begin or Everything in its Right Place one track over to pick your mood up…

Have fun with your obsession…hope you get a chance to see them live sometime, it’s incredible!

Cheers.

I’m addicted too. I tried breaking the addiction by listening to other music, but nothing stands up to Radiohead material. I have another month til I see them live, so I’m going on a Radiohead fast. Wish me luck.
