The Cool Kids live up to title

There was a minute there when everyone was wondering who those super-hip, nerdy-chic kids that popped out of the TV on the Rhapsody commercial were. Clad from head to toe in wolf T-shirts and neon windbreakers, the Cool Kids were on the tip of everyone’s tongue for just a moment.

So, what does one make of this Chicago-based duo?

Plain and simple, in the least pretentious way possible, the group just wants the world to know how cool they are by being themselves. And I must say, I agree.

Normally one of my biggest pet peeves is when people tell me how I should feel about them before I get the chance to make my own decision, but I must say, when Mikey Rocks tells me he rocks, I believe him.

Their surprisingly endearing track, “A Little Bit Cooler,” paints the perfect picture of confidence mixed with cockiness and likability. Mikey Rocks and Chuck Inglish just want to ride their bikes and play their Sega with “Star Wars” belts on while they eat their Fruity Pebbles. I feel like we could hang out and I know that I would want to.

Not to mention, you’ve got to hand it to any guy who even suggests there being sex appeal in picking up ladies while riding a bike. And no, we are not talking about a Harley Davidson motorcycle. We are talking about a Schwinn. In one of their cooler moments, they tell the ladies they “got two pegs in the back and you got two legs under your skirt,” as if to tell her to jump right on.

Bold. Assertive. Impressive. Not three words I would generally use to describe such a scene. But hey, I think I could get on board with that.

After meeting on Myspace.com in 2005, the Cool Kids are still fairly new to the scene, but their main release, “The Bake Sale,” sounds like it could have been released 10 years ago and fit in just fine, but still has solid modern appeal.

In the end, there is still one question: Just what makes the Cool Kids so cool?

As I’ve said, they are more than happy to sum things up on that particular topic. In their very own words, they’re F-L-Y and for those who can’t spell, they are pretty swell guys.
And for those of you who still have doubts? I think it’s safe to say they are way too cool to care.

setting: so last summer (8 months ago)
party theme: the cool kids
attendance: 41
dressed-up guests: 2

bottom line: find a more obscure and pretentious theme. for next summer (in 5 months).
