Lansing's lighting worth trip downtown

This Friday I look forward to heading to downtown Lansing for the annual lighting of Michigan’s official Christmas tree at Silver Bells in the City. A last-minute cancellation of plans in Detroit has led me to venture into Lansing, a place — I hate to admit — I rarely go.

It seems to me that though MSU is only a few short miles from the capital, few students spend much time there.

If you haven’t had the chance to see the Capitol Dome illuminated on a crisp fall night, I really encourage heading down to the festivities Friday night. All sorts of events will begin at 5 p.m. and run till 9 p.m.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m., immediately followed by the tree lighting in front of the Capitol, which will be accompanied by fireworks.

The Capital Area Transportation Authority’s Silver Bells routes are providing round trip transportation to events for the low fare of 50 cents.

Another great thing about Silver Bells in the City is that it’s going on early enough that you can head down to Lansing, enjoy fireworks and free entertainment, and still make it back to campus with time to spare for late-night plans.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I’m looking forward to getting into the holiday spirit.
